News Coverage - New York Times
1. Advice for Europeans: Bundle Up and Get Ready for Outages
Liz Alderman
c.2022 The New York Times Company
Life in some European cities may soon look like this: Staggered electricity outages to save energy. Temporary cuts in mobile phone and internet service. Schools closed for a lack of lighting and heat. Even traffic lights could briefly be powered down.
[Expression]
▶staggered electricity outages : 시차를 둔 정전
The French government last week started instructing officials around the country to plan for potential rolling electricity outages as soon as next month. Britain’s National Grid operator has warned households of possible blackouts from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. if gas used to produce electricity runs short. Electric car owners in Finland are being advised not to heat their plugged-in vehicles on freezing mornings to avoid straining the grid.
And in Germany, the country that has been most dependent on Russian gas, people are taking no chances: Sales of candles have soared.
[Expression]
European officials are insisting that the rationing plans are only a last resort, to prevent uncontrolled blackouts if domestic electricity production and imported power are not enough to keep power systems from crashing.
[Expression]
▶rationing plans : 배급 계획
Europe has made a concerted effort since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February to avoid a worst-case situation by topping up natural gas reserves and even restarting coal-fired power plants to generate electricity. A near-total embargo on Russian oil begins Monday, one of many actions the bloc has taken to deny the Kremlin revenue from fossil fuel sales and limit its ability to wage war in Ukraine.
[Expression]
▶top up : 가득 채우다
▶wage war : 전쟁을 벌이다.

2. Taylor Swift Fans Sue Ticketmaster’s Parent Company
Jenny Gross and Michael Levenson
c.2022 The New York Times Company
A group of 26 fans of singer-songwriter Taylor Swift filed a lawsuit Friday accusing Ticketmaster’s parent company of anti-competitive conduct and fraud several weeks after a chaotic, glitch-filled rollout of tickets for Swift’s upcoming tour left thousands of eager fans empty-handed and unhappy.
[Expression]
▶file a lawsuit : 소송을 제기하다.
▶glitch-filled : 결함이 많은
The complaint accuses Ticketmaster of anti-competitive conduct, saying the company has long perpetuated a “scheme” by forcing fans to exclusively use it for presale and sale prices, which are higher than what a competitive market price would be.
[Expression]
▶has long perpetuated : 오래 전부터 지속되어 왔다.
▶a competitive market price : 경쟁력 있는 시장 가격
Fans who tried to get tickets during a presale in mid-November reported waiting in queues for hours or being locked out of online sales. They had to preregister on Ticketmaster to be designated Verified Fans, but, for many, that didn’t help. Ticketmaster ultimately canceled its planned public sale of tickets amid the high demand.
[Expression]
▶be locked out of online sales : 온라인 구매를 못하게 되다. (구매 페이지로 못 넘어가는 상황에서 표현할 수 있음)
“It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse,” Swift added. “There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I’m trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could.”
[Expression]
▶a multitude of reasons : 많은 이유
